In 2003, VSTI established the Advanced Solutions Lab (ASL), a state-of-the-art computing center. The ASL supports a wide variety of prototypes, proof of concepts, benchmarks and demonstrations using open source, commercial software products and VSTI-developed code, with the goal of integrated solutions in the following domains.

• Information Discovery
• Information Visualization

VSTI customers can use the ASL as an efficient place to develop, test and evaluate solutions to their most difficult data management and processing problems. ASL also reduces the risk of development, by offering a testing venue that will not impact ongoing development efforts or production systems. This tested and proven infrastructure allows engineers to quickly explore innovative strategies and technologies that can be applied to many customer environments. VSTI’s ASL offers the following features:

• Self contained network that allows network bandwidth utilization to be isolated and analyzed
• A high-speed Internet connection allowing demonstrations to be shown in any facility with Internet connectivity
• Virtualized computing environment built on VMware supporting any combination of software and operating systems
• Terabytes of storage
• A robust configuration management control system that supports rapid hardware and software reconfiguration
• Partnerships with HP, IBM and Sun that allow us to perform large scale research and development
